My top tips for surviving the silly season

Yes it's hard to believe but it is that time of year again. Whether it be a work Christmas party, Chanukah, Christmas or new years festivities there is always a reason for too much food and drink. If you don’t want to end up with those extra kilos once January hits or can’t stand the aftermath of these festivities but also don’t want to miss out this is the article for you. Have a read of my 5 top tips for getting through this time of year without doing too much damage to your body or waistline.

1.     Hydrate- this is the most important thing I can emphasis e. Dehydration makes you feel hungry so you will eat more, while drinking a glass of water before a big meal means you will feel full quicker. If you are drinking alcohol you need to hydrate so you don’t feel terrible the next day! Alternate one alcoholic drink for one glass of water. This will keep you hydrated while reducing the number of alcoholic drinks you will consume. The body needs extra hydration at time when there is so much sugar and alcohol intake. Keeping hydrated will make sure your body can work properly to detoxify the load placed on our bodies this time of year.
2.     Have a snack before you go out. If you don’t want to over-indulge then don’t turn up for a big meal starving. Having a small healthy snack before you go out means you will not eat as much of the bad stuff when you are out. A few nuts, a smoothie or some yogurt are great snacks to fill your belly a little so you still have space for something yummy but not so much that you will feel ill later. This is one of the best ways to prevent stacking on the kilos this time of year.
3.     Opt for the healthy option. There is always something healthy at the table but our eyes tend to wonder to the unhealthy option. Try making the majority of your meal something healthy with just a small serving of the naughty treat. For example fill your plate up with salad so there is only a small space left for pie or whatever else you love to indulge in. For dessert have fruit with a small piece of cake. If you fill up on the healthy stuff you wont have much space in your tummy for a huge serving of the bad stuff but you also won’t feel like you are missing out.
4.     Have a milk thistle supplement. Milk thistle or St Mary’s thistle is a particular herb that helps the liver detoxify waste. This time of year with all the extra indulgences and drinks it is important to give your liver a helping hand. This will rid your body of all these toxins you are consuming so they are not stored to play havoc at a later date. Milk thistle will reduce bloating and hangovers too. I often recommend taking the supplement daily for the whole month of December with an extra dose on those days of indulgence.
5.     Digestive enzymes. Our body naturally produces enzymes to break down our food. However, sometimes when we overeat our body is not able to produce enough of these enzymes to digest all that we have shoveling into our bellies. That is why after a big meal we often feel bloated, lethargic and unwell. The great thing is that these enzymes are available as a supplement so you can help your body out by taking some digestive enzymes with your meal. This will enable your body to properly break down and digest your big meal so it doesn’t just remain sitting in your gut fermenting. Goodbye overfull, sick feeling :)

But most of all don't forget to enjoy this special time of year xx

Stop sugar cravings with cinnamon

Day after day I hear people complaining about their sugar cravings, how they make it so difficult to lose weight, how chocolate is all they can think about and how every month these cravings are out of control.

One of my favourite tools for reducing sugar cravings is incorporating cinnamon into the diet. Cinnamon helps to balance blood sugar levels and therefore reduce cravings. It is also a great digestive if you feel bloated after meals and is a warming herb too if you tend to feel the cold easily. Plus it tasted great too!

Here are a few of my favourite ways to incorporate cinnamon into your diet:
1.       Add to smoothies. If you enjoy a breakfast smoothie simply add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for your daily dose.
2.       Feeling a bit chilli? Add cinnamon to your cup of tea. Simply sprinkle some cinnamon or place a cinnamon quill to soak into you hot water or tea. It goes great with both black tea and green tea.
3.       Sprinkle cinnamon over fruit for a delicious treat.
4.       Make a curry of anything (meat, chicken, chickpeas, lentils or beans) and use cinnamon as one of the spices to add flavour.
5.       Make a Middle Eastern rice pilaf using pine nuts, sultanas, turmeric and cinnamon.
6.       Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon through yogurt
7.       Add it to your green juice
8.       Make roast veggies with cinnamon sprinkled on to. Yum Yum!

There are so many fabulous ways to add cinnamon into your diet. Have any other suggestions? Feel free to post below.

5 foods to boost your metabolism and get you in shape for summer

1.       Water. Most people do not drink enough water even though we all know how essential it is for the functioning of every cell in our body. Dehydration slows down metabolism. It also causes the body to hold on to any water available resulting in water retention and bloating. It always amazes me how so many people get by in the life without drinking nearly enough water and then wonder why they are so tired and have so many health problems. I was talking to a gentleman in clinic who is in his 70’s and for the majority of his life would be lucky to drink just 1 glass of water every second day. Now he is wondering why his skin is so wrinkled and he has such high blood pressure. Aim for 2 litres of water a day to help your body slim down and function efficiently.
2.       Chilly is well known for speeding up metabolism and causing you to break out into a sweat too! Chilly peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin which is responsible for this boost in metabolism. Try and incorporate 1 tablespoon of chopped chilly into your food daily to really notice the effect.
3.       Cinnamon not so much boosts your metabolism but helps to regulate blood sugar levels. As many people complain to me that they have such difficulty losing weight as they cannot stop eating sweets (particularly at certain times of the month for females). Cinnamon helps to reduce these sugar cravings enabling you to stick to a healthier diet. Incorporate 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon into your daily routine. I like to add it to smoothies but it can be sprinkled on fruit or even added to tea.
4.       Fibre is essential for maintaining a healthy bowl. This reduces the effects of bloating and a well-functioning digestive system is necessary for weight loss. Fibre bulks up in your stomach making you feel full so you won’t eat as much. One of my favourite snacks is chia pudding as it fills you up without the calories and keeps the tummy flat too.
5.    Protein. Iron deficiency actually slows down metabolism so making sure you are eating adequate iron containing protein will help you lose weight. Protein is also essential for balancing blood sugar levels, reducing sweet cravings and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. I always tell me clients to incorporate protein whether it is meat, fish, eggs or legumes in their lunch and as an afternoon snack and you won’t have the 4pm munchies.

3 steps to kick start your weight loss

Winter is approaching and along with the cold weather also comes weight gain. Whether you want to lose some weight or simply want to stop yourself piling on the pounds during the cold season there are some simple steps you can take to manage your weight.

1.       Start each morning with a glass of warm water and the juice of half a lemon. This helps to ‘wake up’ the digestive system and get it ready for the day. Having an active digestive system will help you to break down your food effectively and assimilate it into the body reducing weight gain.

2.       Eat a nutritious breakfast! What you eat for breakfast sets you up for the entire day. If it is high in sugar than you are more likely to create an insulin spike that will leave you feeling hungry and tired in just a few hours. Then what will happen is that you will reach for that cookie or chocolate bar to give you back that energy boost. Have a breakfast containing some form of protein whether it is nuts, eggs, meat or fish. Some healthy options include eggs on toast, a smoothie or chia pudding with nuts on top. This will keep you full until lunch, maintain your energy levels and stop you craving those sweets.

3.       Get active! Diet and exercise in combination is the best way to lose the centimetres. You can start slow with a gentle 15 minute walk around the block 3 times a week and gradually build up to a 1 hour power walk or gentle jog. Or get a personal trainer so you have someone else keeping you on track!
